LA Weekly Picks MOMz Hot ROCKs

LA Weekly chooses this Monday's, April, 11, 1011 Documental Screening of MOMz Hot ROCKs as a pick of the week GoLA event.
Everyone is invited and it's free at 8pm at the UnUrban Cafe in Santa Monica.

Here's the full listing.

Mom! You're Embarrassing Me!

By Libby Molyneaux

"TURN DOWN THAT INFERNAL RACKET!" is a phrase parents often bark at their unruly brood. But in the case of Kate Perotti's documentary MOMz Hot ROCKs, the sonic barrage is coming from the moms themselves. Perotti introduces us to mom bands from around the country with such names as the Mydols, Housewives on Prozac, Placenta — you get the idea — and song titles like "Eat Your Damn Spaghetti!" Perotti got the idea for the film eight years ago when she was researching women who rock. "I wanted to showcase some of the talent, creativity and humor. Currently, in 2011, there is definitely a large connected international community of mom rockers," she says. How are the sacrifices rocker moms make any different from rocker dads? "Think room service versus diaper service. No need to pour whiskey on your wrist before emptying the bottle. And I would just say, outfits." MOMz Hot ROCKs screens as part of the Documental Film Series.

ZagrebDox 2011 hosts MOMz Hot ROCKs

Many thanks to the amazing town and staff of the 2011 ZagrebDox International Documentary Film Festival held last week, February 26th-March 6th in Croatia. An incredible mélange of North, South, East and West. The people are overwhelmingly gracious and nice, the food and drink simply wonderful. Thank you again for hosting MOMz Hot ROCKs as part of the Musical Globe Programme. I was one of only two Americans to attend, a true honor and memorable screening. The best part was seeing the translation to Hrvatski jezik.

Arts in the One World conference presents MOMz Hot ROCKs and so much more

Arts in the One World is an annual gathering; this is the fifth convening. Pulling together students, faculty, practitioners and activists across disciplines, from immediate and international communities, framing presentations and conversations open to the school and the general public. AOW explore various ways artistic, political, and historical purposes intersect (through reconciliation, the recovery of historical memory, and advocacy for justice).

First convened in January 2006 by Erik Ehn, then Director of the Theater Department at CalArts, currently Head of Playwrighting at Brown University, this year the conference expanded to the Brown campus, March 17-21.

AOW is truly unique and conjures powerful moving dialogue, performance and presentations that give voice to those sometimes pushed aside, asunder or simply forgotten and ignored.

MOMz Hot ROCKs is truly grateful and honored to have been a small part, screening Saturday, March 21, 2010.

Anyone who has time to explore and be part of Arts in the One World will not only become more informed and aware of world communites, but will see and feel the direct connection we all share no matter what side the issue or world we are standing on.

Breakaway International breaks out in Berlin 2010

Los Angeles: Industry veteran Mark Austin has announced that he will launch his new boutique international sales company, Breakaway Media, at the Berlin Film Festival and European Film Market in February. Austin, who was previously Head of Sales at Capitol Films/TH!NK Film International and Director of Distribution for Intermedia Film, has quietly been constructing the building blocks of the company and has secured financing from an undisclosed international financier.

The first film from Breakaway Media is PASSENGER SIDE, written and directed by Matthew Bissonnette (WHO LOVES THE SUN), starring Adam Scott (LEAP YEAR), and featuring a killer soundtrack with songs by Leonard Cohen, Dinosaur Jr., Evan Dando and Wilco. Following critically acclaimed screenings at the Toronto International Film Festival, Los Angeles Film Festival and London Film Festival, PASSENGER SIDE has been touted as “a thinking man’s Judd Apatow flick” by LA Weekly and “a poignant portrait of sibling rivalry and affection” by The Hollywood Reporter. PASSENGER SIDE has recently been named one of Canada’s Top Ten films of 2009 by the Toronto International Film Festival, and both the film’s producer Corey Marr and Bissonnette were selected this summer to participate in the Los Angeles Film Festival Fast Track program, which recognizes up and coming filmmakers on the rise. PASSENGER SIDE will screen at EFM on Feb. 13 and 15.

Also on Breakaway Media’s inaugural slate of films are Mike McCarthy’s comic book-based film noir CIGARETTE GIRL, which was singled out by The Hollywood Reporter as one of 5 Best Bets at the 2009 Comic-Con (screening Feb. 14 at EFM); Tony Elwood’s award winning horror film COLD STORAGE; and Kate Perotti’s hilarious music documentary MOMZ HOT ROCKS.

Said company founder and President Mark Austin, “I am excited to bring Breakaway Media and our slate to the EFM. Moving forward, by working with key agencies and producers, I will be able to package films in the budget range of $2 million - $10 million and to provide a steady stream of quality projects to the international marketplace.”

Betty Rulz

Betty, a longtime favorite worldwide darling band out of NYC put on a stellar holiday show Thursday night at the Highline Ballroom, Manhattan. Gloria Steinem, feminist extraordinaire, activist, writer and founder of Ms. magazine, was honored and made the evening's cause of collecting canned goods feel like icing on a cake. Always time to give more no matter where you are.

In addition, Betty was just featured on NPR last Saturday with Scott Simon. Amazing interview that shows how deep the band is bonded and still wildly creative.

MOMz Hot ROCKs the Naples International Film Festival

The Naples International Film Festival, year one, is one of the most well run festivals I have seen. Kudos to the entire staff, especially Ellen Goldberg and Tim Smith who went above and beyond to make the festival one of the best fest experiences to date.

Special thanks to Nancy Stetson of the

Our very own Mensa member Rachel Yellow of Placenta was quoted "I was thinking about the mom thing. You're shoved into this box, and you're marginalized and silenced and alienated and exhausted and you have all of your resources stripped from you. And I was like, : Damn! That's like being punk rocker!"

Here's a pdf, look what a layout can do.

MOMz Hot ROCKs WON BEST DOCUMENTARY at RIIFF

How could we forget to blurt out that MOMz Hot ROCKs won the Viola M. Marshall Audience Award for Best Documentary at the Rhode Island International Film Festival last month?

It must be because of overwhelming humility.

In fact, I, Kate Perotti was at the festival, was outside of the awards banquet trying to say hello and thank you to the festival director George Marshall for putting on such a successful event in Providence when I saw that he was already on the podium speaking. It was a gorgeous summer day. My wonderful Aunt Madeline and Uncle Bill and Madeline's mother Ann were waiting in the car while I grabbed my posters from the filmmakers lounge. I couldn't see how I would win an award with 234 other great films in the festival and decided to spend my last day in Providence eating the local fare, visiting their friends house restoration projects, going to yard sales, and eating more local fare...

It was only two weeks ago that I found out MOMz Hot ROCKs got the Audience Award (tying with Rock Prophecies).

MOMz Hot ROCKs sailed through the RIIFF

MOMz Hot ROCKs friends and family literally sailed twice in Narragansett Bay
and motored once to Martha's Vineyard where the locals were anxiously awaiting the First Family's summer vacation.

I play/stayed in amazing Warwick Neck with my favorite peeps, somehow the word spread and MOMz Hot ROCKs screening at the RIIFF made the front page of the Warwick Beacon!

The Newport Mercury also reviewed it.  I'll post the link when I get it.

The Rhode Island International Film Fest hosted a plethera of films throughout Providence.
Pat from the Mydols joined me for some of the festivities and screening.
Our mini thrill was meeting Ernest Borgnine
Anne Meara, Jerry Stiller and Doris Roberts at the Federal Reserve Party last Friday night.  They were having a ball together, all so fun, funny and kind.

All in all, we had a fab time in Providence, Rhode Island and beyond.

I can't wait to go back.  I hope to show the film in women's studies departments.   Rhode Island College is on the short list.

Thanks to everyone in Warwick Neck, you of course know who you are.

MOMz Hot ROCKs Salutes One Hot Mama; Grace Jones Rules

What a torrent of power, grace, beauty and humour, Ms. Grace Jones ruled the Hollywood Bowl last Sunday July 26, 2009. She looked beyond fabulous, looking more like an Olympic Athlete than anything else.

And what a surprise when she introduced her son! He, a grown man, was playing percussion on stage with the band. How cool is that. She and Yoko would make a great double bill in some wild space like the Tate Modern...

The show was a mix of a few classics, plus La Vie en Rose and new tracks from her soon to be released in the US album, "Hurricane." The LA crowd was fun as downloads have obviously made there way across the pond to our ears enabling several sing-a-longs. (lame wording for a great moments in music)

She makes the future look brighter for all of us.
