Breakaway International breaks out in Berlin 2010

Los Angeles: Industry veteran Mark Austin has announced that he will launch his new boutique international sales company, Breakaway Media, at the Berlin Film Festival and European Film Market in February. Austin, who was previously Head of Sales at Capitol Films/TH!NK Film International and Director of Distribution for Intermedia Film, has quietly been constructing the building blocks of the company and has secured financing from an undisclosed international financier.

The first film from Breakaway Media is PASSENGER SIDE, written and directed by Matthew Bissonnette (WHO LOVES THE SUN), starring Adam Scott (LEAP YEAR), and featuring a killer soundtrack with songs by Leonard Cohen, Dinosaur Jr., Evan Dando and Wilco. Following critically acclaimed screenings at the Toronto International Film Festival, Los Angeles Film Festival and London Film Festival, PASSENGER SIDE has been touted as “a thinking man’s Judd Apatow flick” by LA Weekly and “a poignant portrait of sibling rivalry and affection” by The Hollywood Reporter. PASSENGER SIDE has recently been named one of Canada’s Top Ten films of 2009 by the Toronto International Film Festival, and both the film’s producer Corey Marr and Bissonnette were selected this summer to participate in the Los Angeles Film Festival Fast Track program, which recognizes up and coming filmmakers on the rise. PASSENGER SIDE will screen at EFM on Feb. 13 and 15.

Also on Breakaway Media’s inaugural slate of films are Mike McCarthy’s comic book-based film noir CIGARETTE GIRL, which was singled out by The Hollywood Reporter as one of 5 Best Bets at the 2009 Comic-Con (screening Feb. 14 at EFM); Tony Elwood’s award winning horror film COLD STORAGE; and Kate Perotti’s hilarious music documentary MOMZ HOT ROCKS.

Said company founder and President Mark Austin, “I am excited to bring Breakaway Media and our slate to the EFM. Moving forward, by working with key agencies and producers, I will be able to package films in the budget range of $2 million - $10 million and to provide a steady stream of quality projects to the international marketplace.”
