Betty Rulz

Betty, a longtime favorite worldwide darling band out of NYC put on a stellar holiday show Thursday night at the Highline Ballroom, Manhattan. Gloria Steinem, feminist extraordinaire, activist, writer and founder of Ms. magazine, was honored and made the evening's cause of collecting canned goods feel like icing on a cake. Always time to give more no matter where you are.

In addition, Betty was just featured on NPR last Saturday with Scott Simon. Amazing interview that shows how deep the band is bonded and still wildly creative.

MOMz Hot ROCKs the Naples International Film Festival

The Naples International Film Festival, year one, is one of the most well run festivals I have seen. Kudos to the entire staff, especially Ellen Goldberg and Tim Smith who went above and beyond to make the festival one of the best fest experiences to date.

Special thanks to Nancy Stetson of the

Our very own Mensa member Rachel Yellow of Placenta was quoted "I was thinking about the mom thing. You're shoved into this box, and you're marginalized and silenced and alienated and exhausted and you have all of your resources stripped from you. And I was like, : Damn! That's like being punk rocker!"

Here's a pdf, look what a layout can do.

MOMz Hot ROCKs WON BEST DOCUMENTARY at RIIFF

How could we forget to blurt out that MOMz Hot ROCKs won the Viola M. Marshall Audience Award for Best Documentary at the Rhode Island International Film Festival last month?

It must be because of overwhelming humility.

In fact, I, Kate Perotti was at the festival, was outside of the awards banquet trying to say hello and thank you to the festival director George Marshall for putting on such a successful event in Providence when I saw that he was already on the podium speaking. It was a gorgeous summer day. My wonderful Aunt Madeline and Uncle Bill and Madeline's mother Ann were waiting in the car while I grabbed my posters from the filmmakers lounge. I couldn't see how I would win an award with 234 other great films in the festival and decided to spend my last day in Providence eating the local fare, visiting their friends house restoration projects, going to yard sales, and eating more local fare...

It was only two weeks ago that I found out MOMz Hot ROCKs got the Audience Award (tying with Rock Prophecies).

MOMz Hot ROCKs sailed through the RIIFF

MOMz Hot ROCKs friends and family literally sailed twice in Narragansett Bay
and motored once to Martha's Vineyard where the locals were anxiously awaiting the First Family's summer vacation.

I play/stayed in amazing Warwick Neck with my favorite peeps, somehow the word spread and MOMz Hot ROCKs screening at the RIIFF made the front page of the Warwick Beacon!

The Newport Mercury also reviewed it.  I'll post the link when I get it.

The Rhode Island International Film Fest hosted a plethera of films throughout Providence.
Pat from the Mydols joined me for some of the festivities and screening.
Our mini thrill was meeting Ernest Borgnine
Anne Meara, Jerry Stiller and Doris Roberts at the Federal Reserve Party last Friday night.  They were having a ball together, all so fun, funny and kind.

All in all, we had a fab time in Providence, Rhode Island and beyond.

I can't wait to go back.  I hope to show the film in women's studies departments.   Rhode Island College is on the short list.

Thanks to everyone in Warwick Neck, you of course know who you are.

MOMz Hot ROCKs Salutes One Hot Mama; Grace Jones Rules

What a torrent of power, grace, beauty and humour, Ms. Grace Jones ruled the Hollywood Bowl last Sunday July 26, 2009. She looked beyond fabulous, looking more like an Olympic Athlete than anything else.

And what a surprise when she introduced her son! He, a grown man, was playing percussion on stage with the band. How cool is that. She and Yoko would make a great double bill in some wild space like the Tate Modern...

The show was a mix of a few classics, plus La Vie en Rose and new tracks from her soon to be released in the US album, "Hurricane." The LA crowd was fun as downloads have obviously made there way across the pond to our ears enabling several sing-a-longs. (lame wording for a great moments in music)

She makes the future look brighter for all of us.

Summer recipes inspired by Prince Edward Island – brought to you by Chef Michael Smith, host of Food Network’s Chef at Home and Chef Abroad

Check out my interview with Chef Michael Smith and try his recipes:

Prince Edward Island Smoked Salmon with Pasta and Simple Lemon Dill Cream Cheese Sauce

This is one of the most popular dishes on my table. Our friends love its bright, familiar flavours and we love how easy it is to make. You can toss steaming, wet, just cooked pasta with melting cream cheese to form an incredibly smooth luxurious sauce. The smoked salmon adds extravagance balanced by other familiar flavours: dill, lemon, onion, mustard and capers. A five star dish for sharing!

Serves four

1 lb penne or your favourite shaped pasta like bowties, long pastas like spaghetti don’t work as well
1 cup room temperature cream cheese
1 bunch of fresh dill, chopped
4 green onions, sliced
1 lemon, juiced and zested
1 heaping spoonful of Dijon mustard
1/4 cup capers
8 ounces smoked salmon, or more
sprinkled sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Bring a large pot of salted water to the boil. Season it liberally with salt until tastes like a day at the beach on Prince Edward Island. As the pasta cooks it will absorb the salted water and become properly seasoned. Cook al dente, until the pasta is cooked through but still pleasantly chewy.

Scoop out some of the starchy cooking water. Drain the pasta but not quite all the way. Leave it a bit wet. Toss the pasta back into the pot along with a splash or two of the reserved water, perhaps a half-cup or so in total then immediately add the rest of the ingredients. While the pasta is still steaming hot it will easily melt the cream cheese and form a rich creamy sauce. Season with salt and pepper. Serve immediately.

Simply Steamed Island Blue Mussels with Three Different Flavours

Mussels are super simple to cook and travel with their own built-in sauce base. They’re easy to steam and when you do, they release a flavourful broth that many connoisseurs swear is the best part. That broth can be flavoured any way you care too so mussels are also a great ingredient to free style with.

Serves four

Five to six pounds of mussels, rinsed well with lots of cold running water
Choose 1 of the following three flavouring groups:

• A 12 ounce bottle of your favourite local beer, a sliced onion, a tablespoon of butter

• 1 cup of orange juice, 1 tablespoon of curry powder

• 1 cup of whatever wine you’re drinking, 1 tablespoon of mustard, 1 teaspoon of dried thyme, 1 tablespoon of butter

Wash the mussels very well and discard any that are open and wont close with a bit of gentle finger pressure.

Pour the liquid and other aromatic ingredients of your choice into a large pot with a tight fitting lid. Stir to combine and bring to a simmer over medium-high heat. Add the mussels and cover with the lid. Shake the pot occasionally and cook until all the mussels have opened, ten minutes or so.

Spoon out the mussels into a serving bowl. Strain the remaining liquid to remove any broken shell or lingering sand in it. Serve with the mussels and lots of bread for soaking up the flavourful juice!

Organic Prince Edward Island Field Greens with Apple Vinaigrette & Pumpkin Seeds

A simple greens salad is both healthy and tasty. When you toss it yourself with local organic greens and a homemade dressing it can also be a powerful way to support sustainable food choices.

Serves four

Four handfuls of local, organic field greens
1/2 cup of toasted pumpkin seeds
1/4 cup of canola oil
2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar
1 tablespoon of local honey
1 teaspoon of any mustard
salt and pepper to taste

In a festive salad bowl, whisk together the oil, vinegar, honey and mustard until they form a smooth dressing. Toss the greens in the dressing until evenly and lightly coated. Sprinkle on the pumpkin seeds and any other of your favourite locally and seasonally inspired salad garnishes!

MOMz shows with the Mydols in Muskegon Michigan in May

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

here we go to Muskegon on the lake to the Muskegon Film Festival!

The schedule will be announced shortly, the fest takes place May 30 and 31st.

I unfortunately cannot get there, I'll be in NYC at the Mamapalooza conference and festival butMOMz Hot ROCKs SUPERSTARS Pat and Kara of the Mydols are going to try to get there. Muskegon is still a few hours from Detroit, I know that's nothing for these girls who can put this road trip in their pocket.  I wish I was going with these two, they are a blast.  I spent a good bit with them during the making of the movie, however, most of my time with them was having too much fun off camera!

I'll ask them to send picks to post and cross fingers they're in focus!

Reno, here we come!

How could I say no to this?

Hello Kate.. you had submitted your film for competition to the Reno Film Festival; however, our Festival competition is limited to Indie SHORT films..those that are 40 minutes or less - and therefore your film does not qualify for competition..  I believe Jeff, our committee chair has contacted you with that information already.      . BUT  we did enjoy it and would like to screen it during the festival, even tho it is not in competition.  Would that be ok with you?

so it will screen Sunday June 21st at 9pm to close their festival! They said it will be "projected outdoors on a hollywood lounge style hotel rooftop."  How awesome it that.  Reno, here we come!   and more details to follow.

MOMZ to Dances with Films

Psyched to say that MOMz Hot ROCKs has been selected for the 2009 12th Annual Dances with Films Festival here in Los Angeles.  It's a very cool one, filmmakers supporting filmmakers, and screenings at one of my favorite theaters, the Sunset Laemmle!
Another great thing is that it's supported by my adored Canon.
One of the prizes is the new HD A1 which I would love to use to shoot my next film.  MOMz Hot ROCKs was shot entirely with the Canon XL1, I bought it just for this film.  Canon was also great enough, via Jung Jin Ahn, to send the top of the line hand held flip screen mini dvd to me for 3 months.  I asked for it then sent it to Daisy Riddle, Suzy Riddle of Frump's daughter to document their road trip from Houston to NYC.  I'll post some of it online...one day...when it would be the best to get some funds to archive material for the Museum of Motherhood.

Official Selection to the 2009 Rhode Island International Film Festival

Thrilled is an understatement, so thankful to say that MOMz Hot ROCKs has been accepted for screening at the Rhode Island International Film Festival August 4th-9th,  2009

The festival is quite special, in the heart of Providence.  I like the way that sounds already.

It is also personally special to me as I lived outside of Providence when I was 2! and have 2 of my favorite people in the world, Madeline and Bill, close by.

I hear its quite fun, Certifiably Jonathan, a dadamentary on Jonathan Winters (about to be released on DVD) won an audience award there last year. I worked on that film too and can't wait to go myself.

August will be beautiful, everyone's invited.

Rock Star Mommy is a Big Idea

MOMz Hot ROCKs superstar Judy Davids aka Rock Star Mommy of the Mydols in Detroit has a whole page about her in The Big Idea's Donny Deutsch new book The Big Idea:  How to Make Your Entrepreneurial Dreams Come True, from the AHA Moment to Your First Million!

Page 45.

in the chapter called "Make Love, Not Work" under the subtitle "Living Loud" it reads:

"This one will blow you away.  At age 42, Judy Davids made a career decision most girls make as teenagers. She decided to become a rock star.  And that's not all.   She had no training and didn't even know  how to play an instrument!  Yet over night Judy went from soccer mom to rocker mom."

Quoting Judy's blog:

It goes on to tell the story of the Mydols with such great writing that even I was inspired by us!  There is a 'Big Lesson' sidebar that reads:

"Be bold about following your dream.  The marketplace responds to boldness."

The page ends with a quote from Judy herself, " As long as you have passion and fun, and are constantly learning and evolving, you can do anything."

Way to go Donny for shining a spotlight on Judy.  She's so deserving, a great person, I love answering the phone from her, I never know what wild project is in the works and am thrilled and amazed to see the sprouts blossom.  It might now be an understatement to say SHE ROCKS!

Come out TONIGHT for Loene Carmen from Australia at SXSW

All you SXSW swarmers, come out TONIGHT 9pm to Stephen F's Bar, 701 Congress Street, Austin, TX and show some love to Loene Carmen!

Loene came through Los Angeles on her way to Austin last weekend and played at the Echo in my neighborhood for the Aussie BBQ. She was amazing, solo with an electric guitar she held her own and drew the crowd closer at a club usually packed with bouncing full size bands.  Her lyrics are lingering, crafted with Nashville mastery and georgeous string playing.

I've known Loene for a long time, she, her daughter and partner at the time sang a song on an album I produced for my son's preschool, Schooloaf:  Everything but the Crust Vol. 1. Her daughter Holiday is now 18 and in a band of her own, BRIDEZILLA with a large following and airplay to boot!

If you are in SXSW sieze this chance to see the lovely Loene.
